The No Reverse Blues
1995 S420 722.366 Tranny 138,000 miles
A couple months ago reverse went out and she's been sitting ever since less a couple of drives around town (forward gears work fine). When shifting to R everything feels right and it feels as if it is going into gear but car sits still. I just assumed it was the internal seal that breaks on these and I needed a full rebuild.
Yesterday I went out to start it up and let it run for a few minutes and to my surprise when I shifted into R the car began moving backwards but felt like the motor was under heavy load and I had to give it gas to make it go. Is there any possibility that this could be the Accumulator Spring / Piston issue in the valve body?

Had same problem with my s320 at about 150,000km.
Turned out the reverse clutches was worn out so bad it also ruined some associated springs and other parts. 1/2 day repair job by the mechanic.
To preserve these reverse clutches try avoid doing James Bond hard reversing or reversing up hill too often.
