ASR light only on?

New member here, I have been scrubbing through all sorts of threads regarding the ASR light. It comes on my 1997 S 500 intermittently and is driving me nuts. When you start the car and let it idle in P, after a few miniutes the ASR light comes on. If I don't let it idle for a length of time and shift into D or R to set off, the light will not come on. However, if I am in traffic, while in D with the brake pedal depressed, the light MAY come on? I turn the car off and restart and the light is off. The CEL appears on occassion after ASR light comes on. I don't know if their is any correlation, but i do experience something like an electrical surge when the vehicle is running. I don't see a surge in the RPM, but I do notice the electrical gauges in the center console flicker slightly intermittently when idling on occassion. While I'm here I might see if anyone knows about the weird window switches that work when they want to. This happened recently and I can be driving right along and go to roll down a window, and none of the switches are responding. Sunroof always works, the windows don't. All the windows don't work when this occurs. However, a few miles later I could try and again, and voila, they all work again. I checked the 30 fuses in the rear panel and they look good. Bizarre. Last thing, I bought an OBD2 scanner, and what appears to the port underneath the steering column, with the little black hinged door that unlatches to access it...there is nothing there! You can literally stick your finger in it and look up to see some wiring and everything under the steering wheel...where is the port located??

the port under dash is useless. You need a connector for under the hood.
