what were the main differences between s500 and s600 from years 97-99, also what are the differences if any from 97-99 s600's, and why are the time on the cluster not dig, I have a 1997 c280 with dig time on cluster yet a 1999 s600 lacks it?

s500 and s600 difference

For the most complete answer go to the Mercedes site and look up the models ( http://www.mbusa.com/brand/container...x.jsp&menu=0_0 ). It is a fantastic resource and I reviewed it extensively when buying my ‘98 S600 last month.

The most obvious difference is four more cylinders and 70 more horsepower for the 600. It’s about a second faster in the 0-60 time and pulls nicely all the way to 155 mph. It is amazing how that twelve cylinder motor motivates a 5,000 pound car.

The other major difference is that the 600 came with all of the possible options as standard.

There are several other considerations including maintenance and resale value. This board has many posts discussing both models.

Good luck.

The later models come jam packed with more electronics. BTW the S600 weights in at 5,995 lbs.

4 more cylingers, 4 more spark plugs and wires, more costly to maintain. Mostly for status IMO.

Besides the obvious engine difference, the other differences were mostly cosmetic (ex. suede headliner, two tone leather seating) and some standard options (ex. parktronic, adjustable suspension).

I can't list specifics beyond what has already been posted here, but when I had my CL 600 in for it's major service at the MB Dealership, the service manager explained to me that it was a totally different car than the 500. Beyond the engine differences I remember him talking about all the electronics and sensors. To be honest, he lost me when he got technical. But I remember him concluding with "even though they look the same, it's a whole different car".

I've owned both the 500 and the 600, driving wise and feel I'll take my 600 anyday.

Curb Weight vs. GVWR

The Mercedes site lists the curb weight of the 1998 S600 as 4,940 lbs. The GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Recommended?) listed on the door of my 1998 S600 is 5,925 lbs. This is the maximum recommended weight of the vehicle fully loaded (passengers and luggage). In America today, this could limit the car to only four passengers and a couple of buckets of KFC.

It is a shame that MB didn't do much to separate our W140 S600 from the rest of the W140 lineup aesthetically. You really have to see and drive the cars to understand why an S320 costs $68k and a S600 costs $132K.
