1999 S500 Grand Edition
S500 newbie transmission help?
I just bought a 1999 S500 Grand Edition. It has 46K, and is giving me FITS. The check engine light just came on, and I can't get out of 3rd gear. I had the car towed to a Mercedes shop last week. The tech said the fluid was like mud. I had the tranny fluid & filter changed ($250). The check engine light was off when I left there. Well, it drove fine for about 2 hours. I was in a parking lot driving slow, and noticed it was downshifting very hard (clunk). I put it on the highway, and it's stuck in 3rd again! I have P, R, N, 1, & 2. Manual shifting does nothing. W & S switch does nothing either. I called the tech, and he said he was getting fault codes off the transmission RPM sensor, and that it would need to be replaced, for $1700! I asked him if he was sure that would fix it, and he said no. He said it may need a new transmission, for $5000! The kicker is the $1700 for the sensor may not be it. So, I'm supposed to pay $1700, and if the diagnosis is wrong, I'm out the $1700 PLUS $5000? I'm about to be sick. If anyone has any advice for me, please do!

listen if your from new york/new jersey area I can send you to a close freind of mine, he owns a transmission shop. he'll swap your tranny for 1500. If its fixable, he'll fix it for even cheaper. He does a great job and had my 1994 s500 transmission changed. It sounds like the person who sold you the car ripped you off :/ .

Eugene, send me the info for your friend, I have a 93 500 SEL that needs a tranny and AAMCO is charging $2900 to have it rebuilt. I'm in the NJ area, Patrick, since you are in Texas, your best bet is AAMCO, or find a local mechanic that you can trust.
