Custom Exhaust System Project started

hey guys.

After talking to my shop forman for a bit today I realized that they can do all the necessary welding and etc inhouse for the exhaust system as well as make the necessary adjustments to the rear bumper to make the opening for the exhaust tips so they come out straight like normal cars instead of that stupid dropped exhuast tip extensions which drive me crazy b/c they are so ugly.

I will go with dual rounded circle tips, roughly 70-75mm size so not too small not too big, just right. The exhuast diameter on the 6cyl W14's is 2.5". I will get a generic universal exhaust off ebay (they go by "HKS style" but in reality its just normal exhaust with 2.5" inlet and dual tip outlets. I will also bypass the stock resonator and get the magnaflow XL free flow resonators which will help alot with exhaust flow but at the same time still keep a good resonance so car still sounds nice and refined. it will sound deep but refined, similar to the new AMG sound. I may do two resonators, have not decided but it should look great and sound great as well. Also it will drop alot of weight b/c stock exhaust and resonator are probably close to 100lbs for the pair where as the replacement exhaust is roughly 8lbs and the resonator about 5-10lbs. Im hoping to give the car that nice grunt under accel but still keep it quiet and refined for daily driving use.

Future mods: I will be doing software as well so i can eliminate the stupid 2nd gear start, usually software fixes up shifting quite a bit, so that should be a good addition with the intake and exhaust. I will stop at Chip, Intake, and Exhaust power wise b/c i think that will be plenty. the car already feels alot more powerful so i'm happy with the way its performing already, I will before and after dyno's of the car stock vs. Chip/Intake/Exhaust i'm hoping for a 30-40 HP gain for all three at the crack, so roughly 25-30 on the dyno.

I'll keep yall updated.

hey guys, good news, resonator is in. bad news is the exhaust is on back order so i will have to wait for that. but I will go ahead and install the resonator with stock exhaust and then after that i'll compare with both exhaust and resonator and etc. i'll keep yall updated.

Just Curious about what you’re doing to maintain proper back pressure. Are you going to throw a new map on your ECU? I burned up an Esprit turbo engine because the O2 sensors were misrepresenting to the ecu and leaned the engine to the point it had a melt down. All Because of custom exhaust and eliminating one of the Cats. This was over an extended period of highway driving. Most exhaust shops are clueless and sense it doesn’t affect the engine right away don’t really care about the
aftermath.

cats are still in place. this is a cat-back project, back pressure is almost not an issue at all b/c cats are direct post header so plenty of backpressure is maintained. Stock resonator and exhaust are extremely restrictive so I will be merely concentrating on. I am doing this exhaust system not some redneck exhaust shop so it will be done right. Free flow resonator and exhaust are hardly enough to make a motor run lean, I have extensive experience. only when you start messing with mass airflow sensors and throttle bodies and headers nad etc does it become an issue. there is nothing to worry about.

don't stop there, why not get headers to finish off everything.... also a nice bored out engine would jump hp very much, some new cams get this s32 to real amg status, forced induct would also get you blowin past most other benzs, now that would be very nice

because all of my money goes into my M3, this W140 was just a side project to get a few extra HP out of it to make it more peppy during daily driving. i'm not gonna go crazy on it, i dont even think i will get software for it, just intake and exhaust and drop alittle weight and get springs to drop the car. other then that it will be done.
