I have asked my dealer about timing chain, and he did not suggest changing it 85 K on my92 SEL, "dont worry about it yet" . As to the AC evaporator, think about, the dash and part of the console come out completely, and I think they also have to go in the heater plenum under the dash. While in these areas it makes sense to change things that are maginal. They changed hoses, replaced the dryer, and a few other things. I would never let anyone who has not done a few of these do it. I have seen a few of these in the local MB dealer shop (apart) and it it is a jumble of wires, hoses, etc.

On the timing chain issue, typically they are replaced when the tensioner can no longer take up the slack. Replacing one at 100k miles is a safe bet, especially when you consider that a new head or block will run in the thousands. I have always replaced my own timing chains, it is fairly straightforward if you have some mechanical ability and the right tools. The best part about replacing the timing chain when it is needed, is that it makes the car run so much better, after all it is responsible for keeping the valvetrain in time with the lower end!

First the evap requires the entire dash to come out. The book says 22-24 hours of labor alone. At $100 an hour most dealers or good shops charge, you are at $2200-$2400 before any parts. You want a shop that has done a few W140 evaps, before they do yours. It is a big complex job don't let someone learn on your car. Although I think if you shop around you might get it done in the $2200-$2500 range.

As far as the timing chain issue ask a few people that know the M119 V8, but from the techs I have talked to they pretty much say don't worry about it.
