500SL Noobie ..

Hey all,

First post :p I was looking to buy another project car (hobby of mine) and I stumbled upon an amazing looking 91 500SL for what I think is very cheap for that much car. Problem is, I know nothing about Mercedes. I am an avid car nut and consider myself pretty knowledgeable in general, just know nothing about this car.

I am looking for specialty shops that deal with that engine and drive train. When I started my search I was looking for a twin turbo 300zx or a Supra for a high horse power build. I fell in love with the SL though. I would like to keep it as streetable and well mannered as possible (seems to never work for me though). I am pulling up a lot of information on the stock configuration and components and have yet to see any weak points in the OG configuration. Just looks like a nice, well built car and would be something new on the track or the car shows.

Sum up my questions:
Anyone know anyone who specializes in parts/build ups for these cars?
Any weaknesses that need to be addressed in the stock build?
And of course, any tips and tricks for a first time Mercedes owner would be appreciated…

Thank you all in advance.

The R129 models are very nice vehicles for the money. I owned two, a 1991 300 SL and a 1996 SL600. Both had their share of electrical problems, but mechanically they were solid. If you are looking for a unique R129, go for a 1990-1993 300 SL with the 5 speed manual transmission. They are rare, but very fun to drive. The 3.2 liter 32 valve mated to the 5spd manual makes it almost as potent as its 5.0 liter big brother. Goodluck!
