Wood around Gear Shifter

Does anyone know how to safely remove the wood around the gear shifter in an 01 S500?

Any help appreciated.

If you are talking about the wood directly around the shifter it just pops up. It is held in by a few clips.

1). take off shift knob (unsrew bottom part then pull up)
2). place fingers/finer tips around the chromish part off the wood trim (or the outter edge) and just gently pull upwards. There are about 3 clips thingys that hold it down.
