XENON LIGHTS

Do you think Xenons will be standard equipment on the new S Class as they are on the SL, and the E Avantgarde?

Thanks,
Sean

I ordered a 2003 S 430 4matic with xenons, parktronic, and the phone. I hope that the xenons come standard cause that price of the car has gone up $6000.00 CDN

Projectors

I have noticed regular beam lights with Projectors - are they significantly better than regular halogens?

interior will be upgraded but no pics out about that yet. The other thing to notice is the grill.... The design of it is different, it is bigger and I think a lot nice as I always thought the grill on the 202 S class was a little small, but now the chrome at the bottom is not surrounded by the hood and looks very nice... I think the back you have to wait to see in person....

Xenons

It looks like bi-xenons will be included with DVD based nav, and SBC braking. - see http://www.jes-mercedes.de

THat's what it is! It's a revised grill, lights, and bumpers, and a revised interior supposedly that we will have to wait and see!

seems more than a facelift

Exterior Changes:

The front lights look much better - they obviously prefer projectors now rather than the dispersed lighting system. The front bumper is sportier and makes the car look better. Apparently the side door sills have changed, the rear bumper, lights, etc.. have all changed as well as the wheels.

Interior Changes:
I'm sure we will see pics within the next month or so. But apparently the interior will have a dvd based comand which will have a much wider screen. The interior will have less plastics and better material.

Engine Changes - 4matic available

Braking Changes - SBC braking

This S will stay till 2006.

I've translated the jes-mercedes text:

In fall 2002 Mercedes will present the S-Class and CL-Class
facelift. The well-known S 320 will be replaced by a new 3.7 Liter
V6 engine with 258 HP. The S 430 will probably be cancelled.
Another extension will be the use of 4matic in the W220. For sure
the S 500 will be available with 4matic, maybe the S 400 will be
available with 4matic, too. The S 320 CDI will get 204 HP and will
be equipped with the 2nd generation common rail. In Spring 2003
the softened Maybach V12 with ca. 500 HP will be placed in the S-
Class and the CL. In addition the electro hydraulic Brake SBC
should be available for the S and CL. Exteriorly new will be the
front and rear bumpers, clear glas headlights, which will also be
available with bi-xenon. The design of the taillight comes from the
Maybach. In the interior will be some improvements, among
others a new Comand with DVD capability.

BTW the new S-Class W221 will come in 2005.

Oh, and the grill is new too! As you can see in the attached image.

thanks Benny

Benny,

Thanks for your translation - I think the article may be wrong about discontinuing the S430 until the new production starts in late 2005? My dealer can't give me any more info till they get training on this car which is late next month.

Well, I've got the following information:

The demand for a S430 is too low, most people choose the S500 instead, which costs about 7.000 Euro more. Next reason is, in all new series (ML, CLK, E) there is no more 4.3L engine. And final the new M112 E 37 (the new 3.7L engine) with its ca. 245-258HP comes very close to the 279 HP of the S 430.

Its different in Canada

Exclusive to Canada is what Mercedes calls the Standard Wheelbase S430 - and it is actually the best selling S Mercedes ever made. Its efficient and lighter than the other mercedes S. Its also $22,000.00 cheaper than the S 500.

I think it will stay. I will keep you in touch as we get more information in the next month or so.

The S 430 is $95.000 and is MUCh better in fuel economy, handling, braking and winter.

The S500 is $22,000 more and out of 10 I see in Toronto, 7 are 430s. My dealer says its the best selling, but of course, I only can say this about Toronto.

You are correct - There are a lot of option. I myself would add the xenons for sure...But even with the nappa and neumatic, its only another $3000.00

I don't need the additional power since I drive a new 911. I need something just for the winter and a regular work car.

But the $22,000.00 difference is almost 25% of the 430's value.. Thats a lot

Thats what I wanted!

But believe it or not, the cost of the E with all the options that I wanted that the S had would be almost the same price!

The S430 comes with cd changer for 2002 (and is now ULEV and has the infrared reflecting wds)

The 2003 model has projector lamps which may be brighter than the previous S; but still want Xenons, and the phone, and parktronic and.......etc.

Also the fuel consomption is not really different: 13.7 l/100 km for the S430 and 14.4l /100 km for the S500. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km is 7.1 for the S430 and 6.3 for the S500.
Handling is the same and braking is the same too and with all the electronics and the xenon headlights, the S500 is as safe or safer than the S430.
That's probably the difference between Europe and the US! Because in Europe there is a short wheelbase variant of the S500 (which is 7.000 € (6.598 US$) higher than the S 430). Well and the added options variate strictly between Europe and the USA. And the US have no S 320 - which probably will change with the new 3.7L engine (maybe it gets a new name).
