Just to clarify, I should push the upper clip down with the flathead screw driver. Not push the bottom clip up, right?
On a side note, since there may be fast blinking and moisture issues with aftermarket LED lights, has anyone here though of simply ordering brand new mirror housings from Mercedes or buying them off a junk yard instead?

I did the switch on my CL500 and had similar problems. As for removing the mirror housing, once the clip is properly opened, it is necessary to move the mirror into a position so it allows the housing to be removed. If the mirror is not in exactly the correct position, the housing will not move - and that is exactly what appears to have happened to you. I spent some time moving the mirror around until it was just right, and the housing slid right off.
As for your second problem - evidently you did not put everything back into place. There are no loose wires in the mix (until you install the aftermarket lights, and when installing those great care must be taken to make sure you do not pinch or damage the wires), so it is likely that your mirror assembly is still not properly seated. This happened to me, and in fact while driving down the road the entire housing sort of moved and was loose - telling me I'd screwed up.
I'd pop the clip and work the mirror around until the housing slips off, install your aftermarket lights, and then put it all back together again.

As for putting new mirrors on an older car - from what I have read, it will not work. They are not something you can swap out for a new set. At the least you would have to replace the entire mirror all the way to the door. Who knows if the new mirror would mate to the door, and who knows if the switches would still work. I've searched all the forums and never seen anyone succeed with anything except 1) Living with the old lights, or 2) purchasing aftermarket lights. I don't think you want to replace the entire door to get new mirror lights.

No, it is the same.
See that silver colored metal clip at the bottom of the housing in this pic? The top part of that clip needs to pushed down(with a flat head screwdriver) to slide off the housing, and make sure the mirror is in a positon so the housing slides off past it. (picture is of Al's car)

I like the replacement front turn indicator lights - and because my door handles were really scuffed up, I put in the chrome inserts. All available on ebay - avoid the Hong Kong seller at all costs.

The malfunction warning is an indication - at least in my case - that the lights were defective, damaged during the installation, or improperly installed.
The wiring is very cheap, and in my case I put electrical tape around the wires before installation. I've had mine in about 6 months, with no problems. (I DID have problems with the stuff I bought from the Hong Kong seller on Ebay. I bought my lights from a U.S. seller, and while they LOOKED about the same, they actually worked exactly as advertised.)

I just put my LED turn signals in about a week ago, and I had the same issues with the Malfunction light coming on, but eventually a day or two it worked itself out.
(If anyone has the problem I heard hooking them up with the hazard lights running will solve that problem)

100 Dollars for the LED lights.(EBAY) Installed them in 20 minutes.
1. Push mirror forward as seen in pict.
2. Stick thin long flathead screw driver underneath mirror(torwards front) and pry clip up so Mirror Cover housing slides off.(be careful)
3.Take mirror inside house or work area and clean up before installing new strip
4. The led strip has 2 screws that need to come out than pull out old LED strip from mirror cover...New strip will pop in
5.Once new strip is screwed in cover take back to car to plug in and mount
6.The Led strip will plug in the 2 center inputs of the 4 prong female connector located on the back of housing on car.
Let me know if you need more help.

Took these off awhile back after not being able to fix the fast dash blinker while the outside the lights blinks normal. Just checking if anyone else had any suggestions, as I'm itching to put them back on. Thanks!

You should also make sure the wires are not damaged. I insulated mine with electrical tape just to make sure.

Just the exterior shell. The mirror stays attached to the car. In fact, you will have to move the mirror around to get the shell off. The mirror needs to be in one position to get the clip released, and then it needs to be in another to slide the assembly off.
It's not to complicated, just give it a try. No real way to mess up.
