Our "Brake Lining" warning just came on the other day...car has 48k miles on it now. Still original brakes from Day 1 (back in July 2001). I'm guessing BOTH pads and rotors have to be replaced up front?

2002 S-430
My 02 S-430 just went in for new pads and rotors for the front. The dealer said its gonna run about $800. The car has 50,200 miles on it. Had a complete brake job done at 12,000 miles under warranty. Not bad I guess!

Just called the independent MB place that we take our cars for service and was quoted $550-$600 for front pads and rotors. Then called the dealer that we go to for warranty work and was quoted $700.
I'm surprised the brakes lasted this long. Our ML eats pads in half the mileage

I have an '01 S430. I bought the car as a Starmark with 20k miles, and right before I bought it the selling dealer replaced all of the pads as part of the Starmark program. When I brought the car in for the B service with about 38k miles, they told me I needed new front pads and rotors and new rear pads. I did the work and talked them down from the orig price of $1000 to $900. In retrospect, the brake light had not gone on, so they probably replaced them too early and took my dough. Next time I'll wait longer. That said, I live in the city (San Francisco) and was told that in city use the brakes usually last no more than 15k miles.
