Very hard to shift into Reverse when cold..

Hey all,

On my wife's 01 S430 in cold weather, shifting the car into reverse is quite tough. I have to literally muscle the gear selector into gear. It's getting so bad that I have to go out in the mornings and force the car into gear!

When the car is warm, the car shifts perfectly.

Please help!

Are you shifting into reverse on an incline? Try using the e-brake everytime you park. And do it in this order:

-Stop the car with the service brake
-Apply the e-brake firmly
-Shift the car into park
-Turn it off

Nope. Level driveway. This is the first year that her S has to sleep out in the cold. Gotta keep my babies warm inside the garage!

It happened again this morning, 35F. I had to really force the car into reverse. Before anyone asks, I had my foot all the way on the brakes and heard the 'click'. Yet it still was very rough shifting out of P.

We have an appointment on Dec 17th, but may have to go in as an emergency case if this gets any worse.

sounds like your brake safety switch is sticking , probably a sticky coke spilt at one time or another. It could be a cable, if this transmission has a cable?? Take it to the dealer let them fix it. I wouldnt force it for to long, something is going to break.

Good luck

yes, sounds like a soda spill in the shifter assy. The colder the temps the harder the sugary syrup gets. There are no cables to link the shifter to the trans....just a linkage rod w/ bushings...and I dont see how cold temps. would affect this area. The shifter assembly is also a control unit...and may be difficult to clean...good luck..
