Trunk Release

If you take the back seat out and can get into the trunk there should be a safety release. Its just in case someone gets locked in the trunk..
I'm not sure if you can get into the trunk from the back seat, there may be metal in between.

Not in my case. 2 days of trying that key. I have a trunk load of groceries that need to come out. The milk, icecream and bread I already know their fate. This car spends every other weekend at the repair shop and I'm tired of it. Anyone has any C4?????

S430 (wife drives E320)
If it has the hydraulic pump system (my 02 S430 just had this challenge) they have to manually crank it open at the dealership and replace the hydraulic pumps. Sometimes they over-torque and don't stop running.
Total cost for me: $1,230. OUCH!

Mine was related to the previous water incident I had. Due to a bad rear SAM which controls that release switch, the trunk would not release even with a mechanical key. When I slammed the trunk that was it. The rear SAM controls (among other things) the rear lights, reverse lights, rear turn signals, trunk lights, trunk vacuum assist and that release switch all of which I had a problem with. All fixed now. The only thing I would advise is make sure that reed valve on your air intake is super clean.

I had the reed valve problem on my 2000 S500 - a tube extends about 3-4" below the hole. Apparently during some work before I bought the car, someone had bent and pinched the drain tube up under the air intake well. Fortunately, all it did for me was keep any air from circulating in the A/C & heating system (the water level was about 2" below the top of the well, so it had not flowed into the passenger compartment.
Once I found the problem and drained the water, my A/C circulation slowly returned. Some electromechanical components had gotten wet, but they dried out and functioned OK. Kept watch, there was no rust.
Some folks who responded to Kenstudios' original post on the water problem have suggested drilling an additional hole in the intake well. If you tend to accumulate a lot of small leaves, seeds. etc., you might want to consider that.
