Question Turning Noise

Something strange occured today. There appears to be a rubbing noise when I turn or zig zag. Something like as if it where pullies or the steering column rubbing against something, however it is only heard from the inside and not the outside. Outside the car makes no noise whatsoever. Has anyone experienced this?

Ball Joints?

mine has a squeky sound, but can be heard from the outside, its like a dry cracky noise.. i can hear it when i press on the hood and push down... a mechanic told me that since I had 20" rimz on there, and it was sitting in my garage, the Rubber portion has dried out and advised that i spray it with lubricant occassionally? i dunno, anyone have any advice... i drive a 00' s430

Much appreciated..

Well...they mechanic had mentioned that the noise is normal, which I know can't be correct. I feel as though something is rough when I turn right or left. I know when you make extreem turns you can hear a noise which is normal, but this one not only has a sound, you feel it in the steering wheel. Now I am going to bring it to the dealer and see what they say.

When you open your hood and look through this area I circled in red all the way at the bottom you will see some part in there covered with a rubber housing and a siver linning around it. That is where your squeecking is coming from. Very carefully use a needle point grease gun and inject some grease into that thing but be very very careful not to rapture the housing. Do this while the engine is cold. You may need to jack the car up and get access from the bottom or on the side fender wall. There's one on both sides of the engine. Oh and by the way I'm not responsible for any damage you may cause while doing this. Do it right and say goodbye to your squuecks and rubbing noise.

Ken,

Thank you very much for the advice, but are you sure this is for the steering noise? I just want to make sure, and yes I will be very careful....

Thanks.

It took me 2 years to figure out where my noise was coming from. First time I went to MB shop, they replace my lower control arms ($850) and it didnt solve the noise. Second time they replaced my steering column ($4500) and guess what, that didnt change anything. There is a third, fouth and fifth time at the shop with no luck. Finnaly got my ball joints replaced ($500) and I went to walmart and bought a large flavor injector ($1.00) and all purpose grease ($2.00) The magic happened. It worked for me and stopped the cracking and squeaky noise.

steering wheel noise

I have the same rubbing noise, when driving slowly. It sure sounds like it is the steering column rubbing against the dashboard. It also does not do it all the time. Do you think this too would be solved by the injection method?

I get this on my w210 e320cdi. Only when driving at slow speeds.

There are many previous threads about this problem. But I have two quick questions: 1. iF UN-TREATED (FIXED) IS IT DANGEROUS? AND 2. tHE RUBBING NOISE AND THE CLICKING NOISE WHilE TURNING TO THE RIGHT BOTH GO AWAY PERIODICALLY? WTF? Thanks

Turning Noise

Well after coming from 2 different dealers and a MB repair shop, they all said what I was hearing was normal. The biggest issue is that it is never consistant, I have been driving with it and there have been no issues, and no one, not even myself has noticed it (maybe because I have acceptedd it as a normal operation)

Well I had the problem and I grased the arms and was all good.

However the noise with the steering column likes it's almost touching the dash and you can hear it inside can be the PAS pump try checking the fluid ... as mad as it sounds ... when there's not enough fluid it feels like resistance on the wheel and sounds like resistance too.

Hey Ken, could you post a picture maybe? If my squeaks don't go away soon I think I am going to go crazy! It makes me feel like I am driving an old beaten up Yugo! Thanks
Johan
