Engine Cool Down

When I return from during the S600 or Turbo S Porsche I always get a fan and point it into the engine compartment. I also open the hood allowing hot air to rise. If I can not leave my garage door fully open, I will not fully close the garage to allow hot air to escape.

Does any one else exhibit this type of behavior?

I first started doing this when I was 18 years old and had an air cooled 911 SC Targa.

I do pretty much the same thing. Particularly on the Turbo Porsche, the electric fan will run for a fairly long time after the engine has been shut off.

I haven't run the S500 that hot to notice but probably the fan will run in much the same way.

If I open the hood it seems to cool off quicker, which I figure is not a bad thing.

Exactly, it’s all about cooling and dissipating heat. External fan use has its roots in racing; to cool motor before the crews start wrenching. I have been doing it for years and have good luck with high end cars.

This I know, newer Mercedes have excellent cooling systems (at least on the N/A cars they make). Though I HAVE done this after hard drives in summer heat, I don't do it everytime. It's not necessary, heat will dissipate, just a lot slower with the hood closed.

I could understand it if you were planning a few runs on track day or something.

I now remember the lesson that changed my cool down procedure.

Some time ago, after a routine run with the Turbo Porsche, I parked the car in the garage. I was in a hurry so threw the car cover over the car and went inside.

I came back about 15 min later because I could hear a fan running. A quick look showed that throwing the car cover over the car was insulating the car and kept it from getting cool air. The internal, electric engine fan finally shut off after about 5 minutes with the car cover off.

My earlier drive in the car did not involve leaning on the turbos to any extent so I didn't think the car was too warm. Now, I raise the hood everytime I garage it to make sure it cools as quickly as possible.

There is a big difference between the S430/500 engine and the S600 engine. The S600 produces so much heat after I shut the engine off that I use the fan when it is in the garage. The fan helps cool and remove the heat within the garage.

Remember, as I stated above, it is not just about cooling the car down but also cooling the garage and house down. I live in California and we have a relatively warm climate.

You can criticize me now, but when I sell the car I will have a line at my door.
