Should passenger airbag be off?

When I start the car, the "Passenger airbag off" light comes on briefly and then goes off. Should this remain lit if noone is sitting on the passenger seat?

thanks,
esprit

This light only shows that the SRS system is in prep. mode until the light comes off. If it stays on, there is a fault in the whole airbag and restrain system. The passenger air bag only would ignite if, in the case of a crash, someone would sit there. Has nothing to do with the light in the console.

I just wasn't sure why the "Passenger Airbag Off" light doesn't remain on when there is noone in the passenger seat. I would expect the passenger airbag to be deactivated (light on respectively) when there is noone in that seat. I am sure the airbag is supposed NOT to deploy in an accident when there is noone sitting there.

Thanks,
esprit
