Side Mirrors

Hello.
On my 2000 S430 there is a rubber band around my side mirrors. However, it seems to be ripped on the top and now just hanging on by a little bit. Does anyone know the purpose of this part? Does it hold anything together? Can I get just this part replaced?

Thanks.

The mirror housings can be replaced, and the light also. they are dealer parts.
Last time I checked the costs for a painted housing was about $189, and the LED was $59. this was for my 2004, your might be less or more I don't know.

I'm not sure what you are referring to. The mirror assembly has a rubber seal that prevents water from getting into the electronics inside the housing. That usually wears out and can be replaced with new ones by removing the entire mirror assembly. That seal is about $10.

Here are your part numbers for those seals. 220-811-01-98 (left/driver side)
220-811-02-98 (right/passanger side)

Thanks Ken. Yes its a rubber seal that goes around the mirror arm on both sides. So this keeps the water out huh? No wonder I am getting the malfunction error on both side mirror reflectors. Is it hard to change? I need to change out my reflectors also I guess I will do it all at the same time.

Thanks.

You need a torx T-20 screw driver. There are three screws that will need to come out. First step is to remove the mirror housing then you will need to fold the mirror in to expose one of the screws. Once you remove the screw the whole assembly just comes out. Once you get started you'll realize it's pretty simple.

Thanks Ken. Any idea where I can get the seals other than the dealer?
I am having a problem folding in my driver side mirror. The passenger folds ok. Any hints on what the problem could be?

Thank you.

Jmiaebrown, sometimes the mirrors get knocked off track and dont fold when you use the switch. Try pushing the mirror with your hand all the way to the closed position then open it with the switch. That usually solves that problem.
These seals can only be purchased from the dealer. Sometimes they may say you cant buy just the seals but they always end up finding them. Keep us posted.

The dealer said they have to special order these seals. They specified that they are not stocked by anyone in NC. Does anyone know where I may be able to get these seals? Thanks.

I am having a hard time removing the mirror housing. I can get the mirror to pull back by pushing up the metal clip but it doesnt come all the way off. I can only get it off as much as shown in Benznodubs pic. After the clip is up and the mirror bends back, how do you take it the rest of the way off?

Once you unclip the mirror housing, adjust the mirror till it clears the housing and it will pull straight off.

So should just the mirror (glass) come off or should the whole side mirror come off?

No. The glass is attached to the whole assembly. The housing comes off by itself then you gain access to the screws that detach the assembly. Keep us posted.

I don't mean to sound dumb but...
Should I just fold the mirrors in and them unscrew the T20 screws, and the fold back and uplug the harness? Am I missing something?

Well. I did it. Somewhat... I did not change the rubber seals because I couldnt figure out where to disconnect the wires. Just didnt want to risk it. I may get my mechanic to try. Now I need to update my head and tail lights. I have a 2000 and I don't really have to have the HIDs. Is there an upgrade of the headlights that are non HID? Are they easy to change out?

Thanks everyone.

there should be two (or more) junction blocks within the mirror unit itself, in
which the wiring terminates. fe/male connectors which simply pull apart.
variation on a theme of bullet connectors but multiple wires.
