According to my '05 S500 service manual, MB recommends synthetic oil and suggests a number of brands (Mobil 1, Castrol, Quaker State, Pennzoil, Kendall, Shell Helix, Valvoline SnyPower to name some). The oil filter is a fleece filter, and many availablle in parts stores won't meet specifications although NAPA auto parts says that it has the MB spec fleece filter. Your service manual should provide the viscosities for the temperature range for your driving.

Your '02 should be good with the same brands. The service products manual for your car lists the engineering specifications the oils have to meet, and I believe it has a viscosity chart. Alternatively, check the labels of one of the approved brands to see if the brand you're interested in meets the same SAE and other specifications.

One thing you don't want to do is change a car that has been using non-synthetic oils for a while over to synthetics.

As to service interval, why not rely on your FSS (as explained in your owner's manual)? See post #5 at https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...97#post2001897.

If you don't have a service products manual, do a little searching. There has already been a lot of discussion on oil.
