Power Steering

I am experiencing a whining noise when I turn the wheel. I believe my power steering fluid may be low. I am not quite sure if I am looking at the correct area. Does the cap have a small dipstick? What I am looking at does. I don't see any fluid on it. What brand of power steering fluid should I use? Does it have to be Mercedes brand?

Thanks for you time.

You should take it to the dealer. If it's low, you have a leak.

There may be another reason also for that noise, if it does not go away by adding P/S fluid. It is a sound like "dry" plastic on plastic and comes from a bearing between the steering column and the top of the P/S gear. If this is it and you are out of warranty my guess $ 400 to fix it.

My dealer topped off the PS fluid and the sound was gone. The tech inspected the system and found no leak. No sound for over a year now. Nothing on the garage floor either.

My car did the same thing. Had a noise and was low. Dealer checked and did not find a leak. They topped off the fluid and the problem went away. I think these cars must eat the fluid.
