I've installed a new cluster for my S430 today.

I was surprise when dealer told me that ‘AFTER START’ option won’t reset my mileage, hours, MPG every time I start my engine. They said that new clusters don’t have that option. I was wondering if this is true… Looks like ‘AFTER RESET’ and ‘AFTER START’ options do have same functions now…

It would be helpful if you told us what year your car is.

On my '05, the after start and after reset options are separate, and they differ (unless I do a reset right after starting).

You zero the "After Reset" statistics (with the R button). The car resets the "After Start" statistics. In typical German style, it isn't as simple as resetting every time you start the car. That would be how everyone but Germans would assume it works.

Reset After Start means after the start of a new trip, which the car defines as the an engine start after the car has been off, with the key out, for four hours or more. This actually makes sense if you're interested in the mileage you're getting on a long trip; it won't reset just because you stop for gas. But it's another one of those overthought Mercedes features that cause people to think something is broken, especially because the W220 manual doesn't spell this out. Half the times the service department doesn't know how it's supposed to work either and MB winds up yanking the whole feature.

If your After Start statistics read zero after the car has sat for four hours, it's working fine (but read the next paragraph first).

To make this a Genuine Only-Mercedes Brand Stupid Car Trick, there's one more complication. After the start after four hours, the After Start statistics don't reset to zero for two minutes or 1.25 miles, which ever comes first (you gotta love the Germans). If you happen to be watching that display on the cluster, you'll notice the previous statistics are still displayed, but flashing. If you press R during that period, they don't reset. If you don't they do when the two minutes / 1.25 miles are up. That's right, the R button means Don't Reset for the After Start display and Do Reset for the After Reset display. But the Don't Reset option times out after two minutes. Assuming you waited four hours.

And you didn't figure this all out? It's so obvious.
