You can not install HID bulbs there as they are all on resistors and the system might not work but.. give it a try.
If your light seems dim, then you should relace it. buyt these lights are not bulbs, they are light modules and they wrok like I said before.

There is a setting in your MFD controls for turning on or off these lights, and setting their intensity.

I suspect the original poster never turned on his headlights when checking the footlights out. It's another one of those little Mercedes touches that are arguably overengineered to the point that owners don't know how they work. People can own a W220 for years and not understand key-dependent memory or the "Since Reset" vs. "Since Start" trip statistics.
My favorite "Stupid Mercedes Trick" was from the W126 and W140 but dropped on the W220. The illuminated icon of the window switches in the backseats (that light only when the headlights are on) would go out if the child lockout at the drivers's door were activated. That way, the four-year old in the back seat would have a visual cue not to play with the power windows. They probably omitted that feature (turning off the illumination, not the illumination itself or the child lockout) because too many owners brought the cars in for "burned out switch illumination." That's why W221s don't have key-dependent memory.
