Rear passenger footlight, does it work or false?

Just a few minutes ago I was opening up all my light covers in the interior to see what type of bulbs they were since Im upgrading them all to higher intensity LED based ones and noticed the rear passenger foot area has a light under the seat, or what looks like a light, removed the cover and seems like its a false light but wires going to it. Is this normal? I got an S55 and wierd to not see that one active, so wondering if other cars come with it and if they are active, maybe I can get that part and swap it into this one.

Below is the light im referring to.

It looks like leds but its not, its just put pins going through a circuit board that lead to nothing.

Part of the Ambient lighting, my front passenger footwell one seems dim, interesting in seeing if you are successful in upgrading the bulbs.

That's what they look like. They have an internal glow. They are fairly dim and only come on when the headlights are on.

Those lights are for the ambient lighting. and are controlle via you CAN-BUS
You can not install HID bulbs there as they are all on resistors and the system might not work but.. give it a try.

If your light seems dim, then you should relace it. buyt these lights are not bulbs, they are light modules and they wrok like I said before.

So it just has a faint glow? Guess Im not changing those then. Will have to test it tonight and see this ambient lighting with the headlights on, never really noticed it.

Actually ambient lighting does not work with the headlights. it works with external lighting. the darker it gets at the sensor, the more the lights come on . you should have lights in all 4 door handle, the front drives and passenger footwell, the rear drivers and passenger footwell, and light at the bottom enter of your mirror that shines downward to your center dash.

There is a setting in your MFD controls for turning on or off these lights, and setting their intensity.

I wasn't saying they were too dim, just that they are supposed to be dim. They're just ambient lighting.

I suspect the original poster never turned on his headlights when checking the footlights out. It's another one of those little Mercedes touches that are arguably overengineered to the point that owners don't know how they work. People can own a W220 for years and not understand key-dependent memory or the "Since Reset" vs. "Since Start" trip statistics.

My favorite "Stupid Mercedes Trick" was from the W126 and W140 but dropped on the W220. The illuminated icon of the window switches in the backseats (that light only when the headlights are on) would go out if the child lockout at the drivers's door were activated. That way, the four-year old in the back seat would have a visual cue not to play with the power windows. They probably omitted that feature (turning off the illumination, not the illumination itself or the child lockout) because too many owners brought the cars in for "burned out switch illumination." That's why W221s don't have key-dependent memory.

So yea if you turn on the headlights it does turn on these ambient lights, there seems to be a micro sized LED in there which shines at the flat opaque plastic. Unfortunately is so yellow its somewhat disgusting, I may try to desolder that LED and get something a bit more pleasing.

Here is what it looks like when its on.

It's supposed to be ambient, not eye piercing.
