2003 S500 at my local dealer
hi everyone,
my local dealer has a 2003 S500 on the lot. black on black.
a couple of observations....
first the 03 and the 02 basically identicle.
the dash material on the 500 is the same as my 02 S55.
the only change i suppose is when you purchase the S600 ro S55.
the tail lights look nicer in person than in any photos i've seen.
the nav system as a cleaner more modern appearance to it.
as far as the front end...the new clear lenses are a nice touch but they don't change the overall front end appearance.
after i walked around the car i went into the dealership and picked up an 03 brochure.
i was surprised to see the S430 is still being offered here in the US.
imho opinion if your in the market for a S500 or S430...go for a leftover 02 ,take advantage of the current great deals and pocket the cash difference. on the other hand if your looking at buying a S600 or S55....go for the 03. the horsepower difference is the real selling point here, not the slight exterior or even small interior improvements.

Actually, the 03 is a completely different car.
Much better interior, nav is a major improvement, exterior touches are prevalient, and in Canada, the 4matic was a badly needed feature.
But I do agree with you in that the horsepower changes to the S55 & 600 are definately attractive!

sean,
as far as i could tell the interior was identicle to the 02 S500. the only change was the nav system. exterior sheet metal is also the same. unless your looking for more horsepower the 02 and 03 S500's are virtually interchangable. imho. the biggest change is the "change" you get to keep by purchasing an 02.

There is no comparison between the S55 and the S 600. The S600 is a better car....price proves it. The refinement of the engine alone especially considering that an S Class Mercedes' priority is comfort, the S 600 will also be slightly more comfortable.

By the time you upgrade your S55 with designo ,other options and performance upgrades to match S600,you'll be way over S600 price but you'll still have "just S55"
Now ,for a few bucks you can upgrade your S600 to Maybach level.

S55 or S600
hi everyone,
in comparing the S55 and the S600 i feel that some of the finer points are being missed when describing the two.
first off...the S55 is meant to be a "sportier" luxury auto while the S600 is meant to be the "ultimate" luxury auto. inside the S600 you get every option...most of them already standard. in the S55 you receive not as many options but an automobile that looks and feels more sporty..ie. the body skirts and wheel packages.
both are very similiar but different. the main difference lies in the smaller details that each individual buyer prefers. obviously my tastes leaned towards the AMG. either way you can't go wrong!

I was waiting while the Dealer was geting my car after service doneand had but 1 minute inside the 2003 S500, they had S430 as well and instantly noticed stiching on front and rear door armrests. Go back and look yourself. On 2002 the plastic on all four door armrests is te worst there is. Yes the differnce is very subtle but worth it and certanly noticable right away .
