Exclamation COMMAND Problem on 1999 S500L

Hi, I've recently purchased a UK Spec 99 W220 S500L. It has a MB 6 CD Changer fitted and also a Nokia fixed handset in the front arm rest.

The problem is when I press either 'CD' or 'Phone' on the command unit. I just get a message on screen that says "No CD Changer" and "No Phone". The CD Changer has power as the magazine ejects fine. The phone doesnt seem to have power going to it.

I took it to MB and after charging me £300 they just told me the COMMAND Unit was faulty and I needed a new one for £2500!!!

Does anyone here have experiance of this problem and know a cheaper way to fix it? Thanks. Paul

Did they check the fibre optic connections between the components? The message you are getting looks like a disconnect in the D2B bussystem.
300Pounds for what??? They just need to hook up the Star diagnosis and it's telling them what is missing?????
This doesn't seem to be right.

Hi bamberger_1
Here in the UK some dealers charge £175 ($350) just to plug the star diagnostics in and tell you the problem.

Hi buycobalt
bamberger_1 could be right and you might have a brake or a kink in the fibre optic cable which runs from the Comand to the CD changer and phone. If you remove the Comand from the consul the fibre optics is a orange double cable which runs to a junction box and then to the CD changer and the phone. You could also take the car to a car audio specialists (http://www.mercedescomand.com/?gclid...MAodzgtKpQ)and ask them, as they probably know more than the useless Mercedes fitters.
To remove the Comand open the ashtray remove the 2 torx screws and slide it out and disconnect the wiring plug (you might need to put the car into drive to get it to clear). Next pry off the Comand trim with a piece of plastic being careful not to scratch it and unplug the heater wiring. The Comand is held in place by 4 torx screws, remove these and just unplug the wiring at the back. Everything goes back in the reverse order and it is impossible to get the wiring plugs wrong.

Also check out this web site it might help http://www.mercupgrades.com/Mercedes...rticle-13.html

dont do anything until you unplugg your battery and plug it back in and reset your whole system, this happened to me, and i unplugged my battery, once the whole car reset, its been fine since, it actually happened to me twice, and twice i unplugged the battery and twice it got fixed.........and one time i found out my fuse had moisture and had caused everything to shut off, it was the fuse under passenger side rear seat...
