Mercedes S Class 500
2001 S Class 500 / Questions

Hello,

I recently purchased my first Mercedes Benz this week from A Individual. A 2001 S 500 with only 1 previous owner. 68,000 Miles / Silver / Black for $20,900

I upgrade the wheels to 18" AMG Alloys. Also upgraded the Tail lights and headlights.

My question is should I purchase an extended service contract ?

I have heard rumors about this year model having electrical issues. I did my research on several S500's before I bought And the majority of carfax reports I pulled were low mile S500's with 3-4 owners on average, Why are they being traded out so often, Are they a troublesome car to own maintenance wise?

Also majority of carfax reports I pulled on 2001 S500's showed electrical services completed by the dealership.

A friend of mine is a dealer and gave me the advice to stay away from 2001 S 500's and go with at least 2003 model. This was after I made my purchase and it has got me wondering should I sell the car or purchase an extended warranty.

The car is in Pristine condition, Nothing wrong with it. All service records are in my Possession.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

Chris =)

My advice is to buy a warranty if you can there are several suspension issuses with early W220. Some to include leaking airmatic struts,spring link bushings crakcing and possibly taking out the sub frame(unless the modified bushings and protective shims are installed,noisy balljoints and so on. It is up to you but any of the above repairs would be costly if it were to happen. But keep in mind if you buy an extended warranty the normally you will have to have an inspection performed and any problems found will have to be repaired before the warranty can be purchased or the noted items found will not be covered. But keep this in mind if any electrical problems due come up very rarely do any modules cost less than $500 plus any labor to replace it. So its your call but if you can i would buy one.

Extended warranty is a good idea on these cars. They have a lot of very expensive parts that can run you broke. I feel bad when people bring them in and dont have warranty and I give them quotes of $2k-$4k in repairs needed. They are nice cars but can be expensive to fix.

Some forum contributors have reported good results with the Mercury (Insurance) Platinum policy. It includes coverage of your Airmatic system and electronics, two of the frequent (and expensive) problem areas.
