Brake Assist/ESP Malfunction????

I was just driving along when these two error messages popped up. Seemed like the steering got a bit stiffer almost like I lost power steering. Any ideas what could have caused this? How can I troubleshoot/fix the problem? Anyone experience a similar situation?

How many electrical consumers did you have on? How old is your battery? and did it clear as you raised rpms/speed?

I just had the radio and the a/c on, nothing out of the ordinary. The battery is probably pretty old. And the malfunctions did not clear as rpms increase. Now immediately after I turn the car on the malfunctions are already there. I was reading on another forum that it could be the brake light switch, apparently this is a pretty common thing to go bad and a relatively cheap part so I might pursue that angle unless there are any other suggestions.

Anyone have a DIY for replacing the brake light switch?
