command system
I have a 2003 S55. Does anyone know if a 2004-2006 command system will interchage with my model? Trying to get a few more features as well as DVD capabilities. Thanks, Dave

The 2004-2006 COMAND uses the MOST fiber optic bus, which replaced the D2B bus used in 2003 and earlier. Replacing the bus is very expensive and requires new CD, audio components, Tele-Aid, phone if you have it and a bunch of electronics that manage these. There were reports of someone doing it, but it's a very expensive proposition. It's probably cheaper to trade cars.

Yes, I know. No, it won't.

The D2B bus and equipment designed for it are simply not compatible with the MOST bus, or vice-versa.

Sorry. I couldn't resist. But the reality is that modding the S55 engine is a very expensive proposition. Because the S65 delivers 604 HP stock (and because the W220 S65 price got pounded when the W221 came out), many of those who want monsters took the easy route. A factory-modified version that includes beefier brakes, differential, half axles, etc., produces 738 ft-lbs of torque stock and can be reflashed to produce 100 ft-lbs more can be had for about the same price as an S55 with significant mods.
That said, there are lots of fanatics who have gotten all kinds of gains from the 55 engine. Most of them are E55 owners. The V12 is not an option there, and besides, it would be so nose-heavy that the handling would be atrocious. If you search the E55 forum you'll find lots of threads on mods. The more extreme tunes include a larger-bore throttle body, so if you search on "throttle body" you'll find them.
