Talking 320 CDi the tale of the Carsoft - Rs232 and the RPM fault.....

My apologies if this has been covered before but I've managed to get the Carsoft 7.4 to work after much poncing around. I thought I'd post my experience in the vain hope it may help another lost soul. So here we go:

The fault initially is with my W220 2000 S320CD1 56,000 miles - intermmitent and usually appeared after a run over 80mph and never around town.
My problem was that the transmission auto of course, would stick in one gear and the engine would provide no more than approx. 2500rpm however, I could move up and down the box via tiptronic - but no kickdown and revs capped at about 2500. After the initial panic that it was the auto box I discovered that if I pulled over onto the hard shoulder - popped her into neutral and gave her a poke - still only 2500 revs. This made me happier - not a lot but slightly more upbeat. Turn ignition off and back on then it was happy days until the next time.

So do I go to the stealers? or have a pop at some self help?

Carsoft 7.4 on a reasonably powerful laptop, multiplexer bought via ebay with the correct leads - went for the cheapest package as they all looked the same and varied by about £100.
I then discovered that an Rs232 9 pin serial interface was needed and my laptop couldn't oblige.

Back to fleabay - rs232 to usb lead - 3 hours of sweat and no joy. I then read somewhere that these leads are unreliable and what I needed was a PCMCIA 232 to usb card for a stable carsoft set up.

Fleabay again. The card arrives - installs in com port 7 - Carsoft looks on com ports 1-4 Ughhh.

After another couple of hours messing around I had a result and found that the following settings are needed:

Bits per second : (baud rate) 9600 (default)
data bits: 8 (default)
Parity: none (default)
Stop bits : 1 (default)
FLOW CONTROL : this had to be changed to XonXoff

Now I'm cooking and get a nice P0100 fault code : Hot film mass air flow sensor - which incidentally ties up with another posters diagnosis of a similar problem.

Available for about £65 Part no:A 611 094 0048 (Epc bless)

Where theres a will there's a relative.

That's all folks!!

I have the same and still trying to figure out if this is really faulty MAF. For a change, my car drives mostly on the motorway so the DPF should not be clogged up.
