Is this normal oil consuming?

Hi,

I have a 2003 S600 V12 TT that I bought just recently with about 100000 miles on it. I made about 1800 miles until now and today the "add 1 liter of oil on next fill" message appeared. Than when I checked the oil level with the board computer it said "add 2 liters of oil to reach maximum level". Since I'm new to V12 engines and had only diesels until now I don't know if that is normal for those engines?

My local MB dealer is closed until Monday so I don't have anybody else to ask for an advice.

BTW, 2 liters of oil is 0.528344102 gallon (1 liter half of that ).

Greetings,

2018 S63, lowered
FWIW, I was at my dealer yesterday having my '06 S65 serviced and the Service Manager told me that my car could burn as much as 1qt every 750 miles depending on how it's driven, etc......and that it was completely normal. That being said, I'm not certain of the difference in oil consumptions between the 5.5 litre (600) and the 6.0 litre (65) but would have to imagine they're relatively close.

Greetings,
Two liters in 1,800 miles would be fairly high consumption but you could have started with a liter or more low and a liter in 1,800 would not be very worrisome. Just keep your eye on the level and watch for leaks until you have a better sense of how much its really using.

Thank you for your answers .

So, this engines do consume a fair amount of oil. Good to know that now as I was worried I might have I leak somewhere :P (I'll still keep an eye on that).

Yes, it could be that it was already a little low when I took the car. I hope to get a good sense on how much oil it really uses in the next months.

I also do drive "a bit harder" so maybe it's using more oil than normal also because of that (as Busa196 wrote).

Thanks again for your help

Not that its the same engine, but my 500 consumes no noticeable amounts of oil. Same with my old E430, or my parents Sl55 or CLK550.

Went to my MB service today and added 1L of Mobil 0w-40 (about 1qt). They told me that it's normal to consume that amount of oil (as you already said). And indeed, if I drive the car harder it will consume about the same amount of oil as a S65 (as with Busa196's car).

Good to know it's not a leak ...

In the 25,000 miles since I got it (new), my S65 has always used about a liter per 2,500 miles. I rarely spend more than 5 or 6 seconds getting up to our usual highway speed of 85 MPH, so my engine is "well-exercised." I wouldn't expect it to vary much.

The V-12 engines can't be compared to the 5-liter V8s or sixes in the area of oil consumption. For one thing, they incorporate oil spray cylinder cooling.

while I agree they aren't totally comparable, the piston cooling oil jets should have nothing to do with it. They simply spray oil onto the bottom of the piston.

That shouldn't have much, if any effect on how much oil gets by the rings or the valve seals.
