I never had that exact situation, but my 2001 twice went totally silent. The only fix was turning the car off for 5 minutes so that all the systems went to sleep. Upon rebooting, all was fine. Annoying, but twice in three years was not a huge deal. If you're lucky your problem will be as transient.

Don't forget that something as simple as adjusting the volume involves at least three computer processors communicating over a copper bus (CAN) and at least three audio components communicating over a fiber optic bus (D2B in your car). If anything hiccups, all bets are off.

If it happens again, often, the dealer can hopefully extract error codes that will pinpoint the offending component.

When the problem whoover describes happened to me in my '00 - but a bit more frequently, 3 to 4 times a month - my COMAND required a firmware update, which fixed the problem.

skylaw , Thanks I will be bringing my car in for inspection next week and will ask them about the firmware update. any idea what this should cost me? I realize it still needs to be done regardless I like to be prepaired!

Thanks

I don't know the cost - mine was done under warranty. However, I do know that the update takes about 2 minutes for the tech to plug the disc in, and about 45 minutes for the update to actually complete. I don't know if there is an artificially inflated "book" charge.
