Noisy valvetrain upon cold start?

Do any of your M113 engines make a quick and brief tap, tap, tap when starting up cold? It only happens when the engine is cold and revs to 2k rpms upon startup.

No, But I notice my steering wheel is firm at start up.

not unusual. Sounds like you get a little bit of tensioner noise until they get decent oil pressure. If your car has higher miles, I wouldn't be concerned unless it still makes the noise when warm or for more than a few seconds.

I hear some sounds but once it warms up in 2 or 3 minutes everything sounds brand new. I did hear a belt sound this morning.

I get this too (tap, tap) but it seems to have subsided after my oil change. I went from 5w40 oil to 0w40. The car cranks much easier now in the cold than before too. My guess is the 0 weight oil gets to all the components much quicker so the tap is probably a very brief lack of lubrication during startup. This effect was probably amplified since the old oil was obviously old and the new oil was clean and had a thinner cold rating.

Belt noise on the other hand is always there in the cold but subsides when the engine fully warms up. I even started getting it on my R which MB has released a service bulletin for.

My car has only 57k miles and I've been using 0W-40 since the beginning of time. The only time I won't have this tapping noise is when I change the oil and put fresh oil into it.

Time for an oil and filter change. When I start hearing my lifters it is a good indication the oil has broken down. Usually around every 5k miles.

I'm glad others concur. Mine started around 6K miles and I finally changed the oil at 7K miles. So all in all, I guess it's best practice to change when we hear the sound.

It's only been 2500 since I last changed the oil. I'll get this noise 500 miles after an oil change.

If that's the case, it might be indicative of a greater problem. As blas0827 posted, you might have an issue with your lifters. Hopefully it's not too serious, but you should prob get a diagnosis anyway just to put the issue rest and know your options.

I'm not sure about the m113 but alot of mercedes engines have a problem where the oil guides get clogged up causing a tapping noise.

There is a diy somewhere to explain it and the repair but I can't find the link. Ill post it if I find it.

Is one link but not the one I'm thinking of , it references the m119
