Keys and towing

My S430 was stolen about a month ago when someone broke into my house and stole the car (with both sets of keys)and other things. The car was discovered last night about a mile from my house with no damage other than being dirty. According to the neighbors it had been parked there every since it was stolen and nobody paid any attention to it.

Since I have no keys to the car I called Mercedes Roadside service to have the car towed. I asked them if it should go to the dealer or if it was ok to take it back to me house. I was concerned they would need the car to make the keys. They informed me it was ok to take it home because all the parts department needed was the VIN to make the key. They had to put the back wheels up on a car to move the car since it was locked in park. Now this morning when I contacted the only dealer open on Saturday in my area and they inform me they have to have the towed to the dealership. Does anyone know if that is correct?

If I do in fact have to have the vehicle towed to the dealer, is there anyway to get it out of park without keys? The car barely made it through one tow after being jerked and pulled, I hate to go through the same thing again.

Thanks for any help!

The only thing that the dealer needs to make you a set of keys is your VIN. They will want proof of ownership so bring your title and your registration documents, along with your ID.

Previous poster is right I got a repleacement key and all they needed was registration (I said you know I own the car I'm in the system) they need it to send to MB for the replacement. I think the dealer just wants to charge you to configure your car (All you have to do is put the key in and it calibrates) Good luck

If you have keyless go, they will have to have the car to configure it, if not then just as the above posts say.

Thanks for the replys! I went to a local dealership and they did not need the car. The dealership in Riverside was just ripping me off. The keys aren't cheap, but it's still better than the car not being recovered in my case. The cost for 2 days was $475. They had to order the key and it should be in this morning. All going well I should be driving the car by noon.
