Idler Pulley's Are Faulty

Over the weekend my Idler Pulley came apart completely taking my Serpentine Belt with it. Car gave no indication but squeeling for 2 seconds then IC went nuts. I pulled over had the car towed home. Got the parts today and fixed in about an hour. I went ahead and did the oil change with my new mytivac it was effortless. I don't want to imagine what the stealer would've charged.

9 qts Mobil 0-w40: $63.00
1 Oil Filter from Autozone: $12.00
Serpentine Belt from Autozone: $27.00
Idler Pulley from Autozone: $37.00

Doing it myself and not getting financially sodomized by Benz: PRICELESS!!!

Anyone else have the problem with their Idler Pulley???

Indeed, there was such a recall; it was for the Harmonic Balancer (an idler pulley). See http://www.benzworld.org/forums/gene...ey-points.html

funny you posted this, while I was re-installing my pulley and belt from just replacing the power steering pump I noticed the pulley was making a ticking sound. I am planning to replace it how much does it cost from the dealership??

And don't think it gets better with the W221. My 2007 W221 S600 idler pulley went bad at 18K miles. I'm impressed you were able to do this yourself without having to take a ton of stuff off the car. I'm also amazed that Autozone had the parts.

BTW, as someone mentioned, my stealership replaced it with "improved" parts. Why didn't they put the improved parts on it in the first place? If this is a known problem with the W220, why carry this issue over to the next model?

Its a lost cause ... there is tsb/recall on the 272 v6 273 v8 eng for the idler pullies
they were having problems with them coming apart and the older 112v6 and 113 v8 engines had similar issues but not as bad they would just make noise if you mention tsb and recall at the dealer you would be amazed they might help out.... all im trying to do is give you guys some helpfull info to save some $$$$ and if they dont you didnt loose anything

BenzAddict: I didn't even call the dealer because I know that Autozone carries a lot of parts for them here. I would guess probably $50 or so for the part.

Yeah I didn't think about any recall but when I took off the pulley it wouldn't spin it was completely locked up. It's a real easy fix not worth it to take it to dealer for them to say oh sorry it's literally a 5 min job to take off and put back on. 1 star screw holds it in not Alan Wrench.

I was wondering if anybody could confrim.. im replacing my water pump and while at it I had remove the Idler pulley. Their is two of them, they are the smallest two pulley one above the other about middle of engine. The lower one has markings on it and is no longer smooth, however I saw pictures online of other engines that has the same marks on the idler pulley. When I took them off they both say 137 202 01 19. Can anybody confirm if those two are suppose to be both smooth or one a bit ridged with marks running on it on surface.
