Car spontaneously dies
I have a '00 S500. Yesterday, while driving, the car just shut down. All the engine lights flashed, and the engine stopped. When I go to restart it, All I get is the sound of the car "starting". It gets stuck with the start motor going, but nothing else happens.
If I wait a while, it will start again. I drive about a mile, and it died again. I called a tow truck. By the time the truck came, it started, again. But I decided to not risk it and have it towed to the dealer. It is now sitting there until Monday.
Has anybody else seen this? Any insight?
The car just had it's "B" maintenance, and I only use Premium gas.

Most likely it's the crankshaft position sensor. http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w220...art-ughhh.html

Thank you. You have given me hope! Unfortunately, I am not technically savvy enough to replace it, so I am at the mercy of my dealer. At least I can go in armed with information.
I'll let you know what happens.

If you purchase the part outside the dealer you'll save some $, but expect to pay north of $200. IIRC, it's ~2 hours labor on the books but I don't have my receipt on hand to be 100% sure

I want to thank everybody for their advice, especially Skylaw.
I had to replace:
1. Crankshaft Position Sensor
2. Sender Unit
3. Air Mass Sensor
4. Plus some gaskets and re-seal valve covers and oil pan
Thankfully I have an extended warranty!
Again, I want to thank everybody who responded. I like being an educated consumer.

Skylaw nails it again!
Crankshaft position sensor, CPS
Had the same problem on a european sold S500 2000 it just died when it got to around 80degrees. When the engine cooled down it started again and ran just as if normal (until reaching app.80 degrees).
My old part number was different than the new one.
003 153 27 28 was the old
And the new one is 003 153 28 28
The job was as described easy but a bit hard to get to with large hands..
I bought the part from a Mercedes dealer and paid app. $200.
No Check Engine Light (CEL) though and no fault code reading on my ODBII reader.
