Help on a purchase??

Hi, i was wondering if anyone could give me some heads up on the maintenance cost, issues, pro's and cons for a 2001 s600?? I currently drive an 2005 e320 and it's a huge regret. my friends at mercedes say i am getting a good deal, but I'm not too sure. off lease 2001 s600 black w/ ~50,000 miles for 17k. Any type of help will be appreciated.

run, don't walk away from an 01 s600.

You get a leak prone, moderately powerful engine in an early car that suffers numerous faults.

If you want an S600, you need an 03 or later.

Scratch that, no matter what 220 engine option you want, get an 03 or later.

The 01 S600 will be slower than a later model s55, it will have the crappy early comand, you will have EXPENSIVE engine repairs, and you'll have to pay a lot in insurance and gas.

Have the dealer run the maintenance history. See what's been done or NOT done. ALL W220's require attention and NONE of it is cheap (especially v12's). If the leaks and other issues have been attended to and updated, thats a plus and you should be spared doing again for a while (if ever) OR if the car has had no issues recorded and presently is issue free (have it checked over by the dealer) it might be one of those that was just made right and will have few of those early w220 issues. Also, see if you can get an extended warranty, with such low miles there might be a company who will at least offer a power train warranty, but it wont be cheap. The 2003+ are certainly quick, but you aren't going to find one with 50,000 miles for that price. Also, does it have any OPTIONS: Distronic, Rear Vent Seats (htd is std), 4 place seats (center console in rear) Side Shades, Sport (AMG) Appearance Pkg, or Designo Pkg? Everything else is Std on a S600, but if it has any/all of those extras it's certainly a deal IMHO, and for under $20K, you'd be hard pressed to find a sweeter car. If you don't want it, and its a Desingo (like mine) has distronic and/or 4 place seating, feel free to pass the vitals and location to me.
