Is there a compas on these cars? I know there is Navi, but it's a real hassle to to have to toggle through the navigation just to see what direction your heading in. I've always wondered this, but just figured I'd ask

It depends on year.

On the MOST (2004 and later) cars, the cluster NAV display shows heading and current street if route guidance is not active (and distance to next turn/distance to destination/next turn if it is). The earlier D2B cars just say "READY" if route guidance is not active, if I recall.

The menu button shows direction on the dash if you toggle through it.

If I'm not mistaken, I had the direction of travel in my MY03 S500 when I was in the NAVI screen on the MFD...

That's where, on a 2004 or later car, you get current street and direction heading. With an earlier model you're out of luck, I'm afraid.
