Great OP. IMHO the 220 is much better-looking, but less in-your-face, than the 221. Sadly, subtle doesn't sell. So even MB now opts for trendy designs that are bound to look quite dated in a few years.
I have been trying to defend the 220 to all the jokers with 126s and 140s who claim that the quality is unmatched, yet they can never quite explain why. Some of these individuals even claim the 220 is not even worthy of the tri-star.
So, I say, instead of airmatic and rim threads, I say we have a thread explaining just why we love our 220s so much.
Let me begin.
That wonderful smooth styling that still looks up to date. sleek, classy, but yet still distinctly mercedes
The powerful, yet quiet and butter smooth engine and transmission
The high quality interior appointments, beautiful wood trim, and soft leather
I believe the most comfortable seats ever installed in a car
The adjustable, smooth, and comfortable air suspension. Although it can be problematic, you simply can't compare it to springs
The options. Distronic, parktronic, keyless go, reclining rear seats, etc. Its literally amazing what a 220 can do. It can cruise at 130mph, with nary any road/engine/wind noise, while using voice commands to control the navigation, change the CD, or using the cluster to check tire pressures for each tire.
Finally, I think the stock Bose sound system is phenomenal.
Despite all the ignorant statements about build quality and airmatic junk, the car has been 100% reliable, beautiful, and completely enjoyable to drive.
Long live the 220.

I was laughing a little reading the comment earlier about it helps me live longer. But after reading this,
Dude, I hope you car is ok and whatever made you hate it is in the current state of passing. But just throwing that comment randomly out there was hilarious

BMW E39
Let's just say the amount of money in repairs that has gone into this car is almost 50% of what the car is worth.
I still go down the road with interior rattles. The car is literally falling apart.

What exactly has gone wrong with it which has caused you so much bother? My '99 has had a few issues but nothing serious and it certainly doesnt dent what is still a glorious car, i bought a 5-series BMW recently and had to get shot of it within a month as i couldnt stand how rubbish it was in comparison to the benz!

When I drive my 2001 S500 they let me into gated communities through the owners lane, without any questions asked, even though I dont have the decal. Folks also hold doors in stores for me when I get out from my Benz and call me Sir all the time.

2000 Mercedes Benz S500 Designo
I agree on its timeless looks. (that could also be because i keep mine detailed regularly ) People are always amazed that my car is ten years old because it looks brand new, and so elegant. The designo packages adds to that immensely.
It's also quiet, silky smooth, and powerful. The W220 can hold its own with almost every car out there on the market today.
Even though I love it to death, and would love to have a collection of W220s, it does have its minor annoyances... creaky plastics, typical wear items, at times dodgy electronics. But they in no way could ever kill the prestige and general feeling of the car.

When I was picking my car up from the dealer yesterday after it was in for a B Service and all the guys in the dealership were fighting to bring it round to the front so I could drive home!
My wife had a similar experience when she took it the dealer to get inspected before we bought it.
There's just something about a black W220 with the AMG package and twin chrome tips that looks so good.

Mercedes S55 AMG
I have an 01 S55, I love it. Very comfortable, and most people who ride in it think it's a 2009 model because it still looks so stylish and is well conserved for its age.
I love driving it - it has a lot of torque, and is great fun to throw around. The maintenance for these cars generally will be more expensive due to the more advanced technology (How many other cars have ABC?) and there are more little things to go wrong, but overall if you keep up with it, it's a joy to own.

I also love the car, maybe a bit too much.
Mine is a 2001 S55 and has around 50k miles on the clock.
We took the car all over the world (Italy, Monaco, France, Dubai) since it was always at one of our 'holiday' homes.
We sold our house in Dubai (right on time) and it would have been a wise decision to sell the car there, shipping it back to The Netherlands would be quite expensive, not to mention all the taxes I would have to pay to get it on NL plates.
And after all it's almost 10 years old.
But when I visited our house in Dubai for the last time and saw my S standing there I had a change of mind.
I entered the car, started it and came to live instantly with a big growl and automatically wiping once to get the dust from the windshield, almost saying "You left me for too long in this dusty garage!".
That was it.... I had to keep the car, arranged the shipping and almost a year later it was on NL plates.
And the funny thing is... I started using this car as a winter car because my DD '07 BMW M5 really is a handful in wet/snowy conditions and everyone asks if this is a my NEW car, in NL you can see how old a car is based on the plates so people think it's a '09 and they really believe it since it still looks brand new after 10 years.
Why this long story you might ask... well, I drove my M5 again today .
It was nice and sunny and man... that car is FAST, the sound is also 10 times better than the S55 (V10) and I can take corners at speeds twice of what I'm doing with the S.
BUT.... when I parked the car in front of my house today I was all stressed out, I had been a lot in city traffic and everyone seemed to be slow as hell today.
With the M5 it's almost like walking your pet lion on a leash on a farm full of nice little sheep.
An itchy little toe is enough to let the car jump on the back of the car in front of you.
The S is so much more sophisticated, it's very fast but you can also drive it around almost without thinking, the seamless shifts, the smooth power band , the comfy seats, the soft close doors, etc.
The whole package is what makes the W220 special, and I love it!
I just had to tell this to you guys (and gals?), I think you'll understand .
