Strange Coolant leak foud and fix

I got my car service about a week ago,Service A. Two nights ago the Low Coolant signal came on. I could not find anything leaking from anywhere at first. I looked under the car and around the belts nothing. Car was not overheating so I took it home. Yesterday, in the morning, open the hood and dried coolant looked like it was all around the top of the coolant tank... I took of the top and while everything seemed fine at first I noticed the Actual top itself had a small crack on the inside on the bottom part. I guess it would seep out. Had to wait till this morning to go a new cap and i get some of the Mercedes coolant, which by the way is it just me or is it a little thicker than normal coolant. Anyway, topped off, new cap, no more light or leak. I am curious though, there is a hose on the top of the coolant tank that seems like it goes no where, anyone know that it is for??
