Mercedes
I took a look and ALLDATAdiy.com has a complete procedure to replace the COMAND unit in your S500. The procedures are directly from Mercedes. They give you a step by step DIY guide to replace the unit. The guide for your entire car is less than $27, and will pay for itself on the first repair.

Actually I have everything off but the top part of the comand unit. Does the top wood piece just pop off and if so how? Thanks

Just use a little wedge of plastic (you could buy one from dealer, I made one myself, 3/4 inche wide, couple inches long) and ply it from one side, it will come out. Just plastic tab on the back hold it to the console.

Don't use flat head screw driver, you might scratch either the console or the wood piece. If you must use it, wrap it in a T-shirt
