2004 S55
Cupholder Compartment stuck shut

So I removed the actual cupholder from the cupholder compartment behind the shifter as I found it totally useless and I could put a bigger cup in the compartment than the holder. All was fine until a couple days ago when the cover became stuck closed. I know there is stuff in the compartment and something has probably fouled the mechanism. Has anyone else had this problem. I did a search and while there has been much hatred and consternation related to the cupholder I've not found anyone with this problem yet.

well lets start with whats in there? Is it something hard or can the cover be pried open? never had that problem.

ooohhh, thats a *****.

I really don't think there is a way to get in there without getting that cover open.

Why can't Mercedes make a decent cup holder. I have had numerous MB's over the years. Several W123's a W126, a pair of W140's and now a W220. The common thread among all of them has been that the cup holder (when there was one) sucked. I just don't understand why a company that makes such a fine automobile cannot make a decent cup holder.

The reason is purely German; when you going as fast as your car will safely travel with conditions you don't have time to drink, text or read the paper. Things I see americans doing everyday on the interstates which makes our slow interstates much more dangerous than those German Autobauns. American and now Jap/Korean cars have enough cup holders for a six pack because of who they are made for.
