will taillights off a 03-05 sclass fit directly on my 2000 s500 ... and are they led taillights on the 03-05 or would i just be better off getting a set off ebay

The OE MB tail lights will fit, but require you to cut off one plastic guide pin and move a bolt to another pre-existing hole. Very easy to do, no problem. When you remove the old tail lights, you'll immediately see what has to be done. The '03 and later bodies have one additional hole for the guide pin, and the bolts are arranged slightly differently - but once you move the bolt, they are an exact match.

The upper part of the tail light (the brake lights) are LED and are quite bright.

3rd party kits are a mixed bag - some good, some cheap looking with a different red than OE; some require you to transfer your LEDs from your old lights (which also have LED brake lights). Some are already set up without the extra guide pin and have the bolt relocated. I don't track which 3rd party kits are good, and which are not, but plenty of others have reported their results. Try a search.

I used OE upgrades after some idiot ran a shopping cart into my taillight and cracked it. I liked them a lot.
