W220 suspension rattle
I have a facelift w220 sclass that is becoming noticably noiser when going over rough / bumpy road surfaces. Couldn't find any play in the usual suspect areas of lower balljoint and anti roll bar links. The rest of the bushes seem fine however I did notice a lot of side to side play in the airmatic strut.
Grasping the upper and lower half you can hear it clonking as you push / pull side to side (feels like the shaft is a poor fit in the housing).
Comparing with the other other front strut it did have some play but far less, is this normal?
Strange thing is the airmatic works perfectly, no leaks, hissing, etc. Raises the car in around 10s, no warning messages.
Can the struts be repaired and what hex/star bit size is need to remove the two bolts that hold onto the balljoint - they seem well rusted!

2003 model (facelift) with 126,000 miles.
Had a go at undoing the two holding bolts but they wern't budging. Wanted to check whether they are star or allen head?

I think at 126,000 the struts might be reaching the end of their service life and the play in them is due to wear.
I would probably change them out before something bad happens.
The bolt is an allen key, not a torx.

Thanks for the reply,
I couldn't tell if they were torx or allen as the ends had rusted. I wish MB would stick to one or the other!
To remove the shock is it simply a matter of disconnecting the air and electrical connection then unbolting it? Is there anything to be aware of, I know the car sometimes make adjustments even when switched off, should I remove any relays or disconnect the battery before undoing the airline?
Does anyone know if these shocks can be reconditioned?
