Engine question help.

Hello all.

I have a 2000 S500 220 engine and while checking the fluid levels today I heard a funny sound coming from one of the pullies. Its the one in the pic with the arrow pointing at it. Can anyone plesase tell me wat this pulley is for? I never heard the little "knock"sound it makes before while I was checking the fluids. I can move it about a 8th of a inch to hear it when the engine is off. With the engine running it "wobbles" a little.

Thanks in advance.

oem pump is $262 at parts.com. Probably made by valeo or something.

depending on your application and vin, autohausaz has a Graf brand pump for about $120.

Thanks Oliverk! Im going to look into that now. Would I need the pulley too? Thermostate? What should I get to replace while its open?

pulley can be swapped. Thermostat might be a good idea, but if you aren't overheating i wouldn't spend the cash. Maybe check the hoses to make sure they aren't bulged and whatnot. obviously flush the cooling system

Advanced Auto and Autozone sells that water pump..I'd do a thermostat also and check the hoses like Oliver said.. The Flush will happen by itself when you change the water pump.. ( don't use the old fluids...)

Be sure to get that changed as soon as possible... It will come apart on you when you least expect it and make a mess if you don't.

I'm not sure I would trust an autozone pump. If I go with part store parts, I tend to prefer Napa, as the quality appears to be the most consistent.

I also think that there is more to flushing the cooling system than pulling the pump, as its not the lowest point in the system, therefore, there is still a bunch of coolant in the block.

cheers.

the new fluids are designed to last 10 to 15 years, use the benz compatible fluid and simply replace the lost fluid as long as there is no rust/contamination evident.a total system flush is possible but to do it right you would have to use distilled water,
