Looking to own...
I am a new member here (just joined 2 mins ago actually) and the sole reason was to try and see if anyone is selling an 02-05 S class here preferably a 430 or 500 and black/steel grey on black/grey interior.
See I actually have a seller for the one I want it's an 02 S430 black/black with about a good 180k mils on it and I already got the deal with the guy for 10k, now It's been since august and it's already october and he keeps asking me to wait till he finds a new car for himself, Sadly he's a limo driver and the bank gave him only 25k to work with, and I doubt he can get himself an 06 S class in good condition for 35k so I won't be seeing this car anytime soon.
Needless to say i didn't put a deposit down on it and I can't really wait any longer since I started my new job and I'm past training and finally need a car instead of wanting one for my job. Fortunatley I had the pleasure or may I say displeasure of driving an 03 Bmw 330i and found that it's not my thing.
The s class got the auto window rollup when you close it, air doors that suck in if you don't close em, and remote startup (which yeah I know you can put in the car) but still I prefer luxury over the bmw, I felt cheap when I sat in it today and it didn't really pull that well with it's 200 sumthin hp I'm guessing.
In any case excuse me for my sob story but I am looking for a new car for myself asap. if anyone has one in good condition (I do request that I hook it up to a mercedes computer and check it all around first as well as get a carfax report on it before I give my final answer)
I am not interested in a salvage title or cars that need engine replacements. Please send me an e-mail or private message me as I will be going to dealerships and posting in craigslist and such. I'm looking to make this purchase within the next 3-4 days.
Thank you all.
P.S. if S-Clusiv reads this post can you tell me where you got your w220 s class lights with the daytime running lights? that looks really good thumbs up to you. And sorry about that Amdeutsch I am in Brooklyn, New york but I don't mind if the car is far away I can "take" a chance i guess =/ and skip the comp hook-up but i will still need the carfax =/

Go for the designo version if... you want unsurpassed luxury in nappa leather and selective leather colors and prefer superior paint formation and selective colors that only few cars have. Also get some extra burled wood trim.
Go for the amg/sport packages if... you want a sportier look and specifically S55 want something that will haul *** all the while maintaining the luxury. Dont get me wrong, the S500 is fast too!
I have a 2000 S500 Designo and I can post some pics if youd like. Welcome to the forum and good luck!

good luck with your search.
But as for the maintenance, that's covered My dad's a greasemonkey and can take apart the thing and put it back together while I watch and "attempt" to learn, in turn I fix his comp =/ it's really a win/win situation.

If you need a daily driver for a job, and don't have a healthy bank account, please steer clear of a car with 180,000 miles. The Benz will go much further than that, if it is properly maintained - but you have no idea whether that car was, and what the cost will be to get it up to snuff. Even with Dad's labor, parts are expensive.
You can get an '04 or an '05 for $15 to $18K in some locations. Black is a common (and beautiful) color. It may be a stretch, but even if you have to finance the car, go for the newer model and lower mileage.
If your wallet isn't that healthy yet, it will be some day. But for now, go for inexpensive, as new as possible, and reliable. Keep the Benz in mind for later. It's a great incentive to do well.

If your dad is a GM, then I disagree with the others suggestion that you should look for something more affordable to operate. I have found EVERYTHING on my S500 to be very easy to work on myself and the aftermarket/OEM alternative suppliers for these models is healthy so you can avoid the stealership for parts.
Most fear the air suspension, but that is how I got such a good deal on mine. Simple system and not expensive to fix if you have someone willing to get their hands dirty and has the time.
Good luck. Don't forget Craigslist (of course, don't know if you are in a larger US market) as a good source too. I just helped a buddy buy a Rover in LA via CL (flew one way, cab'd it to sellers house, bought it and drove it that night home to San Francisco).

Cars get old, things break, and you need parts to replace them, and those parts are expensive.
From what I'm guessing, the OP is a younger guy, who is looking for a nice car on a budget.
At the $10k price point, I'd say buy the newest 210 E-class you can afford. It has far less of the electronic goodies, but it also has far less things to break.
Also in NYC all the prices are much higher than everywhere in the country and all the W220 I see on the street for sale are already messed up(Airmatic-Shot sitting low) and other flaws I can tell. If one thing breaks on your car you have to have cash on the side to fix it. Does your dad know how to work with these cars? Its not the same as fixing a Ford. Warranty on the Car? 180K Miles is extremly high, I bet that whole car needs to be replaced in parts.
Most important thing is to take it to get inspected before you buy it. Spend that $100 or whatever it costs because you dont want to buy a POS.
It's not an issue for me to buy one, I've seen a couple from 8-12k I just don't want a lemon car and I figured this is a benz enthusiast forum so they take care of their cars.
As for the electronic problems and suspension. I'm not too worried about it, I got a friend that can get me benz parts on an employee discount in the mercedes company and a master mechanic from mercedes in the family so I'm not paying alot for maintenance and parts really.
The cars the dealership offered me weren't in my price range though. I don't have pull over the manager haha.
In any case I'm just probably gonna go with the 03 330i cause I will need a car by monday =/
Guess I'll go browse a clk 55 now =/ It's just when it comes to coupes I'm more of an M3 fan, if it's a sedan i'm more of a Ls460, 750li or S class fan. =/
I was looking for a sedan at the moment. k thanks forthe tip I'm going to go browse ebay and such for a clk but i'm more or less leaning otwards the S class, I absolutely adore this car.
If you get a high mileage S Class, make sure all the major stuff are done, otherwise you need to budget for it.
Good luck.
by the way I'm located in monterey california
