My 2000 S430 with 167,000 miles is having transmission problems. It slips when you try to accelerate from a stop. What should I check first and how do I find out what transmission I have. Thanks in advance.

When was your last tranny service? What do you mean by slip? Tires spin? Loss of traction? No movement just revs? Crunching sound? Have you ever had your flex discs serviced?

I bought the car 5 years ago with 80k miles, never did anything to the tranny. By slipping i mean it revs high but goes slow.

my 2000 s430 tranny just died at 188000 miles. The only symptom of failure I noticed is that after driving agressively, it would sometimes downshift VERY hard into 1st. On one occassion something snapped when it did this.

I bought a used transmission and my local independent mechanic installed it for $375. I paid $800 for the transmission.

BTW I have an extra torque converter for sale with just 80k miles on it. I know the 2000-2002 tranmissions from a s430 or clk430 will work, dont know about other years,. The s500 uses a different tranny

that scares me.... after aggressive driving my '00 with 44k miles can downshift a little roughly...

Go buy a bottle of SLICK 50 high mileage transmission treatment...most auto parts stores sell it for about $15,

the product itself might be snake oil, but it comes with a 36k mile transmission warranty! be sure to check inside the box since people tend to steal the warranty cards. $15 insurance is the best investment you can make if it fails
