exactly right. They have a dampner in the gauge that keeps it at "middle" from 160 to 215 or so. Above that it starts to climb. They realize the average buyer would freak out if they saw that thing moving and they'd be flooded by service visits. MB would rather put in a useful gauge, confusion be damned. That said, I don't think the new ML and such even have a temperature gauge..
yes i noticed that they never go up or down no matter how long its been on

Mine seems to have always (through winter, summer, open road, and city driving) stayed just above 80. I recently replaced the fan (due to the fact it was quite loud), and now I am often closer to 100. I have always watched this pretty close, and while I certainly admit that I am now watching more closely, there seems to have been a change. My Dad has the exact same model as me (2000 S430)... when we watch his temp gauge under similar conditions, his stays closer to 80 than mine. Odd. Any additional insight would be appreciated.

I just recently changed my antifreeze/water and put a bit too much antifreeze in. Guessing about a 60/40 split rather than the 50/50 (this is mercedes antifreeze by the way). Temperature use to be spot on 80 degrees C and now fluctuates to over 90 in stop and go traffic. Idling, the fan turns on at about 95 degrees and drops the temperature down to 80+ pretty quickly.
In short....normal.

Hi guys I have a problem that is related to engine temperature. Not sure if anyone's has experiened this before but I have a s500 2005 with 107,000 miles. I've notice that whenever my engine Is below 85-90 c it's rough and vibrates alot. I've changed all mounts but this is obviously a engine related problem ? Let me know of anyone has this problem and solved it thanks !

No, no check engine lights or any other notifications. It's strange because as soon as it hits about 90 c it's smooth but if go on the highway with high airflow and the engine cools I would feel the vibration again whenever I accelerate

The thread temperature ran up a bit like s5benzo's gauge, but I think both are OK
The red warning mark on my gauge is well over 120, it could be 130 or 140, no figures there.
But the needle has alwasy been between 80 and 90 and judging by the info above, no one ever got near to 120.
Overheating must be a very rare issue.

did you really check that you have engine vibration? What about vibration of the fan?
Faulty mounts do cause vibration, noise, but do not affect the temperature.
I cannot see normal temperature causing vibration, maybe the other way around. It is anybody's guess, but vibration might ill-effect some sensors. ??
I would rather check what is the rpm when you get the vibration, it is engine related.

I would expect the fan to come on sooner - that sounds like too much up-and-down.

I don't think there is any reason to worry.....
Guys, no one is talking about water pump. Everyone is just pointing at the fan. If the water pump fails, the fan won't do a thing to stop the engine from overheating. The thermostat operates the water flow through the cooling lines along the engine block. At slower speeds, the thermostat allows lower rate of flow and the temperature rises a little bit, raising the pointer. This happens mainly within city limits.
I live in the middle east. I drove my E240 (W210) 2002 all the way to Saudi last February covering over 3000kms. The then average Winter temperature was around 23Deg C. During cruise, the pointer remained fixed at 80 marker for several hours. If I'd slow down, the pointer would rise a little over 80. The marker hovered between 80-90 during stop and go traffic.
Now I have s320 (W220) 2002 and this is doing the same thing. The marker shows a higher coolant temperature at 90 marker but keeps fluctuating.

Regarding the 99 data sets displayed in the AC window, I can scroll through the data sets but they are labelled only by number 1 to 99 and a value is shown for each one. Does anyone know where we can get a list of what the 99 parameters are?

Keeping the radiator fan motor working
Should the motor get grease or oil periodically? And which? I've got what appears to be a good motor, but there is some squealing. And I could use a new pulley for it, but can't find it separately. Any ideas?

Cooling Fan speed
I have a problem with the cooling fan speed. Fan is always slow regardless of temp. I changed the relay, and still same problem. If I remove temp sensor wire the fan speeds up but ac compressor turns off.
Is there anyway to make the fan speed permanently high??? Temp here in UAE goes to almost 50 in this time of year, and in city its not bearable to sit in car with ac blowing hot air, Have to stop on fuel stations to sprinkle water on condenser. Got new compressor, Expansion valve, Air drier, Fan relay.
Want to speed up fan permanently or going to fix an extra fan in from. My car is S320 W220 1999.
