Changing some parts on the S600...
I posted over in the M275 board but I know you guys would be more interested since this is the W220 turf here.
Either next week or the week after, the car is going in for some major surgery. The list of items includes:
AMG 65 turbochargers
SHR NAG1-HTCr 722.6 transmission
Quaife LSD
SpeedDriven TCU software
Thermalnator intake manifold spacer
Custom fabricated CAI setup
New motor and transmission mounts
New A/C compressor
New ABC tandem pump
New ABC vibration dampers/pressure collectors front and back
New ABC valve blocks front and back
New starter
New spark plugs
New ignition modules (coils)
New ignition voltage converter
New fuel pump/filter
New drive shaft flex disks
These items I am still debating, if time permits...
All 4 new AMG ABC struts from the S65 AMG, new control arms, thrust arms, wheel hubs and steering knuckles.
As always, all will be document and posted here for your viewing pleasure!

I don't think it's THAT expensive! eBay is a great place to source quality new/rebuild parts.
Also, while the motor is out it's possible to change things like the compressor, the pump and the starter. Without pulling the motor those items are impossible to change, so while we're at it might as well do it as "preventative maintenance"

Here are the AMG turbos from a totaled SL65 AMG:
I did not know too much history on these, except that there were about 25K miles on the car when it got totaled. I felt the turbine and it felt solid but the compressor is hidden behind a 90 degree bend so I could not feel it. Eitherway I sent the turbos to a turbo shop and had them rebuilt. Better safe than sorry.

I was told that the 65 series turbos are exactly the same as the 600 series. Is that true or does MB use different part #'s? I can tell you that you can hear the 65 series turbos spooling up whereas I could not hear the turbos on my previous S600. The intercooler is larger on the 65 series for sure.

The 65 Motor and the 600 motor are both the MB M275 V12 Biturbo. Displacement is .5L more on the 65 motor along with a few other items. Besides that externally they are identical.

As far as the H/E goes, yes, the 65 H/E is about twice as large as the 600 one and also has a built-in P/S cooler as opposed to the meandering pipe that's used for P/S cooling on the 600's.
Here it is:

I've watched the progress of your car over the last couple of years almost and can't help but think it would have been easier (and cheaper) to get a 65 and debadge it

Negative. I bought my car two years ago, S65 AMGs were no where near as abundant and "cheap" as they are now. I also think that you might be under the wrong impression... I did not spend nearly as much on my car as one would think.
Also, none of these new "mods" would be happening if my passenger side turbocharger did not blow up.
On a side note, I love my car, love modding it, love it being unique and I'll keep it up until I'm ready for a W216 CL65 purchase.

I got the Bosch starter for $118, ABC pump was on eBay, met the guy locally and gave him $300 cash, he told me it was a "vacuum pump" for the "air-ride" lol... Turbos were listed for $1200, best offered for $750. Spark plugs from a seller in the UK, $210 for 24 NGK plugs. A/C compressor best offered for $300. Valve blocks for $600/ea.

Jealous !!!
While I am glad I am still under warranty with both of mine, I do wish I could do all the AMG things you are doing to make them top notch. I am also afraid to even Renntech for fear someone at a dealership here will try and use it as an excuse to void my warranties. None of the dealers here in Pittsburgh seem very competent working on V12's, and at this point it seems like I am driving early 80's Jaguars because they are in the shop so often, and for a month at a time.

Good luck Chris
I will be keeping an eye out on this one.
Planning on doing a before and after dyno?
I am VERY curious IF the 65 turbos do anything or not
By the way, why hasn't anyone just bought a tranny cooler from summit, and install it in series with the stock HE. This would save about $800 from buying the MB taxed larger HE, and accomplish the same thing, IMHO.
Again, good luck with that MAJOR surgery

That is me on YouTube. I put it back together and took it out for a spin, made that ridiculous noise and had absolutely no power.
I'd love to do a before and after dyno, but it's impossible to do a before.
See here for explanation as to why: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUF-hnIW5Gc

Just messing with you on the 'cheaper to buy a 65' thing, I'm just jealous because you've got the best 600 out there...apart from mine
