Brake pad light on, change quickly?

So last week my breaks started to squeak, I think it's the front ones since I just changed the rear ones in December. Today the break pad light came on. When the light comes on, how bad are the pads? Should I change them very quickly?

Anyone know how much the front break job usually is at an indy with parts and labor? I have an 01 S55.

Thanks!

On most pads that use sensors the surface of the sensor wire is 2.5mm from the backing plate of the pad. This gives a fair amount of time until the pads are changed. However, if you have noise then something is wrong. Weren't the fronts inspected when the rears were changed? Can't imagine any competent mechanic not doing that.

Driving with metal to metal contact may result in damaging the front rotors and require that they be replaced even if the haven't reached the thickness spec.

So get it inspected ASAP and don't drive it unless absolutely necessary. Sorry I can't give you a cost estimate since I do my own and am not familiar with indy labor rates. Generally, pads and rotors for the front are a little more expensive than the back if that helps.

Changing it is a cinch, if it's just the pads. If you need to replace the rotors, it will take a little more time and possibly experience doing it prior.
