Sirius Radio - 2004 S430

Hello all and thanks in advance for any feedback. I am looking to add a Sirius radio to my 2004 S430. I installed the Cell-Blue Tooth installation last week and all went very well after researching MB forums (thanks to all).

My vehicle has nav, CD and phone already prewired. I read many threads on the Sirius Install and have a few questions. I took out the trunk panel to look and see what was and was not there. Here are where my questions lay. I have pics but will put them up as needed.

My car has the Nav and CD unit installed and both are wired and work. They both can be accessed without moving the panel (as you all know).

I assuming that the color wires are copper and the orange colored wired are the fiber optics. Excuse the Caps in the message but I used them to ask questions.

Upon taking the back panel out, I noticed that the below the Nav and CD units are two other units. The closest one to the wheel well, towards the rear and looks like an amp, has a wire harness (all copper) (WHAT IS THIS FOR?). It also has a smaller 3-wire connector (WHAT IS THIS FOR?) and the orange fiber connection. There is also what looks like a fan on the other side of the unit.

The second unit, closest to the trunk (towards the rear) has a 3-wire copper connection and the opposite side has the fiber connection.

I did not find any loose fiber cables in this area but I did find two thin cables. One blue and one white, which seem to run from the units area to the back of the car to the other side (passenger). WHAT ARE THESE CABLES FOR and WHERE DO THEY RUN?

The bracket which houses the Nav and CD changer looks like it could hold another unit on the top as the way the frame is formed, there are sides that flare up. WILL THIS BE ABLE TO HOLD THE SIRIUS UNIT?

So my other general questions are, is my car plug n play for Sirius? If so, do I need fiber connections to connection to the MOST System? If I do, where would they be?

The reciever I am currently negotiating for is the B6 783 0086, which in doing the research is the unit for my vehicle. My research also shows I need an install kit, B6 783 0086. IS THIS THE SAME AS THE BRACKET? If not, WHAT IS IN THE INSTALL KIT?

I also will need the antenna B6 783 00XX. I may have found a black one. The MBRACE antenna on the car is black so it may not look so bad on my gray Benz. If needed, can I paint this antenna? I am looking for the primed antenna but cant seem to find one.

Lastly, when I took off the rear panel, I noticed a rectangle plastic box, to the top and towards the front of the vehicle, that has a handful on connectors going into it. What is this box and its connectors?

Thanks again for any input but want to make sure that when I pull the plug on buying the Sirius Radio, I wont be pulling my hair out trying to install it.

Hello Jim,

Actually the sisius installation is not hard at all as your car is prewired. Unfortunately I am out of town and can't remember the exact location of the unit but you are on track with the installation. IF you look around back there, you will see one harness with a blue ans brown wire ( i believe ), and the orange MOST connection, and also the lead for the antenna. The antenna wire will let you know for sure that is the sirius hook-up.

THe box that is located near the wheel well, it your Gateway. Which houses your amp and controls everything. you shouldn;t have to bother with it.

The part numbers for the sirius kit is what you will need. I'm sure the bracket comes wth the kit if not, you will need that also. But don;t just buy the bracket.

The MOST ( fiber optic ) connections will be in series and I have to look at my car to see which units it goes between when I get home.

Also they sell a low profile antenna instead of using that big PC MOUSE looking thing. I remove mine when I bought my car and bought the low profile. IT was 98 bucks but since you need one anyway this is the one I would get. They come in Gloss Black but I have seen many that were painted the color of the car. I left mine black for the accent.

Oh yeah, you have to drill a whole in your trunk to mount the antenna OR you can just opt not to use the Mercedes antenna and go with a standard magnetic Sirius Antenna. The only drawback to that is you will have to use some type of double sided tape to hold it as the trunk on your car is aluminum. I used this setup on my w211 and it looked fine.

here is a pic of the low profile antenna on my w220, and a shot of the stick on that I had on my w211

Thanks for the response. I should be getting the rcvr and antenna this week. The bracket in my car seems to be formed for another unit (of some kind). The top of the bracket is formed as to house another piece of equipment.

Did you have to add another bracket to attach to the existing bracket or did you have to install a new bracket to house other units. My bracket already has the CD changer and Nav unit in it.

I have been searching for an install kit for the past few days and cannot seem to find one. The person I am buying the rcvr from is an installer of MB. He said he will provide all the cables, screws, etc needed for the install (minus the bracket).

He told me I would need to unplug the Nav (or CD Changer) fiber and hook that fiber into the Sirius. Then use the fiber he will provide and use it from the Sirius to the Nav (or CD Changer). Something like this. He has the instructions and will provide.

My MB dealer says he will install the unit for about $300 to include the drilling of the trunk. I think thats a good deal.

If you have the directions on how to install this, can you post it. I have an install for a 2005 class I have a 2004), but there seems to be a few changes. I am going to look again but I can only find the blue/white cables. The seller told me that I only need to install one of the cables to the Sirius rcvr.

Thanks again, Jim

300 for the install is a great deal, I avoided drilling the trunk and bought a small magnetic antenna instead. The antenna that came with my sirrus is huge and looks terrible. If you have a newer antenna fin they look better, but drilling into the trunk does not appeal to me.
