01 S500 40k Cuts out, no power at all

I just got this 01 S500 a few months ago, its all original and nothing had been changed aside from oil. I noticed a hesitation in it when it would be floored. It would only accelerate quickly when the pedal was about half way down, pedal to the metal its actually slower. I figured it was the fuel filter so I changed it a couple days ago and damn it really needed it! When the gas came out one side it was black, the other it was clear. After I replaced it this thing was a damn ROCKET! I had never felt it accelerate so quickly. That only lasted about a day then it went back to hesitating again.

Today I fired it up and it took a few extra seconds to start and ran rough. I put it in gear, went to take off and it barely accelerates at all, the only way it will even move is if you push down on the pedal about a 16th of an inch any more and it cuts out so badly it will only decelerate. I am wondering maybe its the spark plugs? I don't really know what to do but I would rather not go to the local MB specialist because they try to rape you... Any advice is appreciated!

If your fuel system was that bad from your filter description, the clog may have traveled upstream...to the injectors or anywhere else in the system.

If you hadnt mentioned that fuel deposit issue, and how it ran good after the fuel filter, my first reaction would have been a bad pedal. The electronic pedals on these cars have a very common failure where you push and they dont respond. See:

But if your fuel system was that bad, perhaps there was still gunk in there and the new filter got clogged up again

I would try another fuel filter and see if that fixes it again. If it does, the new filter will probably get clogged again until your gas tank or other components may need to be flushed out.

Ok, yeah that's going to be my first attempt. I can't believe my local MB specialist told me it was going to be $300 to replace the fuel filter! It took me all of 20 minutes to change it! What a bunch of scammers!
