Engine problem. HELP!

Alright I'm stump after reviewing everything. Here is what I'm going thru. Got this car from my aunt cause she didn't want to deal with it anymore. Its a 2000 mercedes benz s500. First off, she took the car to the automotive to get a tune up than when she got it back and drove it for a couple of weeks or so the car started to act up. The car started to hesitate than was going to die. She got home turned the car off and tried to start it and it wont. She said its going to need a new engine.

First thing I did was read every post that might be the problem. I changed out the cps and battery. Put in new spark plug cause the one before looks like junk. Started right up. Only problem was now it smoked like crazy, It smelled like it was burning gas and a lot too. We took it around the block and it drove fine just lots of smoke coming out and I notice the gas was going down fairly quick. So we took it to the gas station to get some gas. Pump $20 of premium in it and tried starting it and it just died. It makes this loud thunk (grind) noise and than stops right after it cranks like 2 times. After that its dead quiet and wont start. Than if you wait for 2 min and try to start it, it tries to start but doesn't want to catch. Any help will be great. Sorry for the long story.

This is my first mercedes and I'm not afraid to touch and fix cars.

If you ask, you might screw up further without guidance. That car seems flooded and starving for air, or it would start. Unless, there is something else. The moral is: cannot be fixed site unseen. Take it to diagnose, then get a book/dvd to see what you do.

Sounds like a bad MAF. Check engine light on?

Your best bet is take it to a workshop/dealer that can hook the car up to SDS.

I didn't have it quite as bad as you but when I changed my spark plugs, the MAF came loose from the clip and when I put the air intake manifold back on the engine would shake. After several inspectoins and removing and re-installing the manifold, I noticed the MAF was wigling back and forth. It had come loose from the clip (which you just squeeze back tight) and make sure the MAF and the hole on the manifold line up perfect. its worth a check>>?> if its not loose maybe its actaully just going bad.. check the codes

i very much doubt you need a new engine, its probably something very simple.

my vote after the MAF is crank sensor. They often fail and cause a "no restart" condition. Check/replace both before throwing in the towel

The car would still start if it is a bad MAF. Just run like crap and such.
